“He descended into hell...” —Apostles Creed

The byzantine fresco of the Harrowing of Hell in the Chora Church in Istanbul. Christ, the Last Adam & Second Man ( (1 Cor. 15:45-47) standing on the broken down the gates of hell, is pulling Adam and Eve out of their tombs by their wrists, depicting the inability of the human race to save ourselves. Behind Adam stand John the Baptist, David, Solomon, and other righteous kings all deferring to Jesus as King. Under Christ’s feet are keys and many locks broken open illustrating Christ having destroyed the enslaving powers of darkness in his death on Calvary.
